It is the best known and most widely used pre-service training course in the world, and enjoys recognition internationally. It qualifies trainees to teach English as a foreign language anywhere in the world.
The course is designed for candidates with no previous English teaching experience, but is also suitable for those who have some experience but no formal training in the TEFL field.
What does the CELTA involve?
When you take the CELTA course you learn the principles of effective teaching and acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. The CELTA gives you lots of hands-on teaching practice and builds your confidence as a teacher.
The CELTA focuses on five main areas:
– Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
– Language analysis and awareness
– Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
– Planning and resources for different contexts
– Developing teaching skills and professionalism
How will I be assessed?
There is no final examination. Trainees are graded and assessed by the trainers on a continuous basis. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge ESOL, will visit the course in its later stages to ‘moderate’ the assessment.
Can I take the CELTA?
In order to apply for the course you should:
– Have a standard of English which will enable you to teach at a range of levels (equivalent to CAE level although you do not need to have the certificate)
– Be aged 18 or over
– Have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education
You can take CELTA courses in three different ways:
We run three full-time courses a year, in January and July.
Courses have a minimum of 120 contact hours and are given in a period of 4 weeks. The full-time course is very intensive and you need to be fully committed. A lot of preparation and study is required outside formal contact hours. It is not possible to take the full-time course and work at the same time.
We run part-time courses from February to June and August to December on Fridays from 8:30am to 4:00pm.
All our trainers are experienced, fully qualified and approved by Cambridge ESOL to run CELTA courses:
Online CELTA is our teacher training course that combines online CELTA training with face-to- face components. This course has the same course content as the presential courses.
The face-to- face element of CELTA Online ensures trainees gain valuable teaching experience with six hours of peer observed teaching. An experienced Target Language Services trainer provides feedback on each teaching practice session.
Please note that this course requires you to come to Target Language Services for 2 weeks.
